Transformers Pretender Roadgrabber

Here we have the Decepticon Pretender Roadgrabber. As far as I know, there is only the Hasbro version for Roadgrabber. Roadgrabber is pretty unique in the Pretender line as the outer shell is that of a vehicle and not that of a humanoid or a monster. Roadgrabber has an Autobot counterpart in Gunrunner.

As mentioned above, Roadgrabber's outer shell is that of a vehicle. In this mode, it is a primarily dark purplish-blue vehicle with an orange cockpit and light purple front claws and bonnet. All the weapons included can be fitted onto the shell for an attack mode. Also unique to Roadgrabber is that he has another attack mode which incoporates the inner robot. The shell has a gimmick in that when you roll the vehicle over a horizontal surface, the 2 cannons at the back alternate to give a firing effect. The rear wheels are responsible for the 'firing' gimmick. There is a portion at the rear of the vehicle (where the 2 rear turrets are placed) that can be flipped out to reveal 2 exhaust fans. Pretty interesting detailling for a place that is not normally seen.

As mentioned, there is another attack mode for Roadgrabber, this attack mode is created by placing Roadgrabber in the cockpit in a standing position. The front of the vehicle can be opened and the darker purple portion can be flipped down to reveal a sort of control panel. There are 2 slots at the sides where the rear 2 cannons can be removed and then placed into it. The rear portion is lifted slightly when the front is lifted. In this attack mode, it resembles that of a gun emplacement.

Roadgrabber's alternate mode is that of an airplane/hovercraft. Actually, I do not know what it resembles just that I know that it has a cockpit and wings which are the rear turrets from before.

Accessories for Roadgrabber include a gun and the 2 cannon turrets.

Transformers Pretender Gunrunner

Here we have the Autobot Pretender Gunrunner. As far as I know, there is only the Hasbro version for Gunrunner. Gunrunner is pretty unique in the Pretender line as the outer shell is that of a vehicle and not that of a humanoid or a monster. Gunrunner has a Decepticon counterpart in Roadgrabber.

As mentioned above, Gunrunner's outer shell is that of a vehicle. In this mode, it is a primarily red vehicle with an orange cockpit. All the weapons included can be fitted onto the shell for an attack mode. Also unique to Gunrunner is that he has another attack mode which incoporates the inner robot. The shell has a gimmick in that when you roll the vehicle over a horizontal surface, the 2 turrets at the top alternate to give a firing effect. Something to take note of is that the 2 rear wheels have a rubber band in the middle of the tire, mine has deformed and dried out though due to the age of the toy. So that is one point to take note of when buying a loose Gunrunner. Also, the rear wheels are responsible for the 'firing' gimmick.

As mentioned, there is another attack mode for Gunrunner, this attack mode is created by seating Gunrunner in the cockpit. Pretty lame, but it's included in the instruction manual and pales in comparison to Roadgrabbers other attack mode.

Gunrunner's alternate mode is that of an airplane. The bulk of the look is given by the jetpack which essentially is the whole plane itself, the inner robot serves only as the base. The 2 missile pods can be connected to the Gunrunner in alternate mode and in robot mode.

Accessories for Gunrunner include a gun, the plane/upper turret and 2 missile pods.

Transformers Pretender Skyhigh

What we have here is the Autobot Pretender Skyhigh. As far as I know, there is only the Hasbro version for Skyhigh.

For the outer shell, Skyhigh is modelled after a human decked in armour. The chest area resembles that of a large face, though exactly what face it is, I'm not too sure although it kind of looks like a mole to me for some insane reason. This particular feature is also present in the other 2 Pretenders in the same line up, namely Groundbreaker and Splashdown. The outer shell can hold the gun and the helicopter blades as a sort of dual bladed scythe.

For the alternate mode, Skyhigh transforms into a helicopter. The gun turns into the rear exhaust of the helicopter and the rotor blades can then be fitted on top of it. The rotor blades cannot be held by the inner robot.

Accessories for Skyhigh includes a helmet, a belt, a 2-bladed rotor and a gun.

M.A.S.K Raven

Here we have Raven from Series 2.

In it's normal mode, Raven closely resembles it's real life counterpart, a Corvette C4. It has chromed hubcaps. In this mode, Raven can seat 2 figures. An interesting to note is that there are seat belts to hold the figures in place.

In it's attack mode, Raven transforms into a sea plane. To effect the transformation, one has to push a tab on the right of the vehicle to spin the front portion 180 degrees. The doors have to be flipped down and the wheels turned 90 degrees inwards. Finally, a button where the rear license plate is to pop up the rear spoiler to reveal a set of jet engines. The engines are chromed. The black bars on the wheels can be lifted up to reveal a laser on each wheel.

Raven comes with 2 buzz saw missiles which can be fired from the front of the vehicle. This is the toy's main gimmick. To start, load the 2 projectiles into the firing bay. When fully loaded, one projectile should sit on top of the other. To fire, one has to pull back a tab located at the rear of the vehicle to 'cock and load' the firing mechanism, much like cocking and loading a real gun. After it has been loaded, a projectile can be fired by pressing the button at the top of the vehicle. To fire the 2nd projectile, one has to load the firing mechanism again. 1 load, 1 shot, simple as that. This gimmick works in bothe modes.

Raven's pilot is Calhourn Burns who sports 2 tone blue scheme with neon orange details. His mask is Gulliver which has the power to shrink or enlarge objects and then return them to normal size. The mask is primarily a neon orange with blue visor and black details.

M.A.S.K Piranha

Here is Piranha from Series 1.

In it's normal mode, Piranha is a motorcycle with accompanying side car. There is chrome on the wheel spokes and detailling at the sides of the motorcycle. There is also a removable windshield for the motorcycle. In this mode, Piranha can seat 2 figures.

Piranha, like Gator, has 2 attack modes, 1 being the semi-attack mode and the other being the full attack mode. To enact the semi-attack mode, one has to push the shorter tab at the back of the side car. What this does is to make the 2 lasers and sidewings pop out from the front and side of the sidecar respectively. To create the full attack mode, one has to push the longer tab at the back of the side car. This pushes the sidecar out which creates a launching effect which is the main gimmick for Piranha. In this mode, Piranha, much like Gator, is an aquatic vehicle, namely a submarine. The figure can be placed in a lying position and the windshield can pull up to cover the figure. The submarine has a chromed rear section.

The pilot of Piranha is Sly Rax who is primarily blue with algae-ish green and silver details. Sly also sports a pair of shades much like Brad (Condor) and Lester(Iguana) and has a moustache and goatee. He is very close to his cartoon counterpart. His mask is Stiletto which has the power of firing darts. Stiletto is primarily a dark grey with silver details. There is not much difference in colour scheme between the long and short versions of the mask.

M.A.S.K Jackhammer

Here we have Jackhammer from Series 1.

Jackhammer in it's normal mode is a Ford Bronco, in other words, a truck. It's really similar to it's real life counterpart and this is where the M.A.S.K toy series truly stands out. There's chrome on the front grill and on the hubcaps. Jackhammer in this mode can seat 2 figures.

In it's attack mode, Jackhammer turns into a heavy fire assault platform. To effect the transformation, one would first have to push up the bonnet via the protruding tab, this causes the front grill to flip out and reveal a pair of small laser turrets. Following which, one would have to roll the vehicle forward to push out the turrets. One has to then press a tab at the rear of the vehicle to bring up the rear and then fold out the 'spoiler' to reveal a seat and another pair of laser turrets. Finally, a removable machine gun turret which is stored in a depression at under the turret has to be fitted into the peg hole at the seat. In this mode, Jackhammer can seat 3 figures. The pop up section can be rotated 360 degrees. Jackhammer has this gimmick where when you roll the vehicle over a horizontal surface, the front grill turrets will alternate, producing a sort of firing effect.

Do take note that the removable MG turret is the only accessory of Jackhammer and is a frequently lost item. So if a seller claims a Jackhammer to be complete, do remember to check for the removable MG turret. This turret only appears in the toy and does not appear in the cartoon series.

The pilot of Jackhammer is Cliff Dagger, who sports an eyepatch, a black beret, a purple top with black holster and black bottoms which is very similar to his cartoon incarnation. His mask, Torch has the power of shooting out jets of flame aka a flamethrower. His mask is primarily grey and has holes at the where the eyes & mouth are, a vertical strip below the mouth and a vertical one at the top of the head. This version of the mask is the long mask version. The short mask version has no such holes, instead, it is painted black where the holes are in the long version, except for the one at the top of the head.

M.A.S.K Iguana

Here we have Iguana from the Racing series.

In it's normal mode, Iguana is an ATV that is primarily black with red/black seat and red hubcaps. Iguana seats 1 figure. To seat the figure, the soles of the figure are inserted into a bracket and then the figure can then be placed in a seating position on the seat.

In it's attack mode, Iguana transforms into an attack platform with chain saws at the front and back of the vehicle. To effect the transformation, one has to hold the front 2 wheels and then squeeze the 2 exhaust pipes and the rear axle together. The seat cover will then rise, pushing the figure into a standing position. The vehicle will then shorten. Then the front of the vehicle can be flipped out by pulling on the handle bars. This will expose 2 mud cannons and the front chain saw. The front chain saw can be placed in such a way that it will rotate as Iguana is rolled along a horizontal surface.

The pilot for Iguana is Lester "The Lizard" Sludge who has a purple/silver/black colour scheme. The figure has black shades moulded over the eyes and sports a red crew cut. His mask is Mudslinger which fires out blobs of sticky mud. The mask is primarily red with grey details.

M.A.S.K Goliath

Here we have Goliath from Series 3 aka the Racing Series. Goliath is primarily a team of 2 vehicles which have the designation of Goliath I and Goliath II, being the formula sports car and the transport truck respectively.

Goliath I is a formulat sports car which has a blue and yellow chassis. Chrome is present in the hubcaps. The rear spoiler is detachable and designed to come out in case of rough play. Goliath I seats 1 figure.

In it's attack mode, Goliath I transforms into a plane much like Thunderhawk. To effect the transformation, one would have to detach the front 2 wheels and slide them under the bottom of the chassis. Then one has to press the air scoop at the top of the vehicle to pop out the wings at the side, pop out lasers from the front and push the rear wheels together to form the jets. In this mode, Goliath I has 2 bombs, 1 at each wing which can detached and be dropped as bombs would. But in the cartoon, these were missiles that when fired produced a slick surface at the point of impact.

The pilot for Goliath I is Matt Tracker who features a half blue half yellow colour scheme. His mask is Shroud which creates a black cloud which acts as a smoke screen. Shroud is primarily yellow with black visor and a red scarf over the mouth area.

Goliath II is the transport truck for Goliath I. The cab is primarily blue with the rest of the main body being black. The 2 transport ramps are primarily grey. There is chrome on the hubcaps, side steps, lower grill and behind the rear cab. Goliath II can seat 2 figures in the front cab.

In it's transformed state, Goliath II turns into an assault platform. To effect the transformation, one first has to fold up the 2 transport ramps 90 degress each and then turn the ramp in an anti-clockwise direction. In doing this, front of the vehicle comes up and the seat portion of the front cab flips down. Missiles can be fired from the 2 transport ramps.

The pilot for Goliath II is "Chief" Nevada Rushmore, whose scheme is that of a native american indian. His mask is Totem which fires totem shaped grenades which spin when fired out from the mask.

There is another gimmick when Goliath I is attached to Goliath II in normal mode. To effect this gimmick, one has to push Goliath I off the front of the ramp. In doing so, Goliath I will transform into it's attack mode although one still has to bring down the front 2 wheels. There is actually a disc protruding out from one of the transport ramps that triggers the transformation effect caused by pushing the air scoop down.

Accessories for Goliath include 2 bombs and 2 missiles.
A point to take note of is that the connection of the transport ramp to the vehicle chassis is rather weak as it consists of an undersized tab connection for such a huge piece. Also, the transport ramps are also pretty fragile, so do take note when playing with it or when intending to buy a piece. These pieces may even break while it's still MISB. My first Goliath II broke after transforming once and I've heard of many others doing the same thing.

M.A.S.K Gator

Here we have Gator from Series 1.

In it's vehicle mode, it is a jeep with a 2 passenger capability. In this mode, it is primarily orange with chrome in the hubcaps and front grill. There is a turret at the top roll bar which can rotate from the back to the top to form a semi-attack mode.

In it's attack mode, Gator transforms into a speedboat. To transform, one has to pull back the 2 black tabes located in between the 2 side wheels and the chassis of Gator will pop up. Once the chassis is raised, a spring action will propel the speedboat out. The speedboat has a gun which is at the driver's side and a depth charge which can be propelled by pressing on a tab at the back of the speedboat. The speedboat is primarily in orange with a black rubber front and chromed side-vents. There is a depression at the front of the speedboat with a peg in the middle which serves as a mask storage area. This particular feature is quite unique as I have only seen it in Gator only. However, with the mask placed in the holder, it often comes in the way when attempting to release the speedboat using the main gimmick.

The depth charge tabe and the rotating gun turet can be detached and re-attached in case it comes out due to rough play.

Accessories for Gator include a chromed depth charge, an attachable rollbar turret and the speedboat.

The pilot of Gator is Dusty Hayes. Dusty sports a blue overalls and red vest with silver detailling. He has a pair of goggles moulded on top of his eyes. His mask is Backlash which has the power of shooting out kinetic blasts. Backlash is primarily a matt silver with blue visor and detailling.

M.A.S.K Condor

Here we have Condor from Series 1. Take note that there are 2 different versions of Condor, 1 featuring a short mask and the other featuring a long mask. The version shown here is the one with the long mask. To my knowledge, the vehicles available in Series 1 had a short mask run and a long mask run. The short mask was the earlier version of M.A.S.K toys and were pretty much cartoon accurate to the technology available of that time but were pretty hazardous as a choke hazard since they were pretty small and easily swallowed and were thus, discontinued in favour of the long mask variant which is pretty much the dominant version found nowadays.

In it's vehicle mode, Condor is a green motorcycle with a retractable bike stand and black detailing. The canopy is made of a opaque grey plastic and can be removed from the bike via pushing from the front of the canopy towards the passenger seat.

In it's attack mode, Condor turns into a 1 man helicopter. To effect the transformation, you first have to bring up the rear black side railings and then pluck out the rotor blades from the sides to form the main rotor blades. In doing so, the bottom part rotates out to form the helicopter stands with the retractable bike stand becoming part of it. The front light also becomes a laser gun which rises automatically when pulling the side railings up. Finally, one has to pull out the rear wheel to form the tail rotor.

The pilot for Condor is Brad Turner. His colour scheme is mainly yellow with black and reddish purple detailling and a pair of moulded black shades instead of eyes. His mask, Hocus Pocus, has the power of creating realistic holographic images. The mask is mainly yellow with black visor and details which complements the figure giving it a uniform look.

M.A.S.K The Collector

The Collector is one of the 3 M.A.S.K 'traps' as I call it. This is so as the main gimmick for M.A.S.K is of normal ordinary vehicles turning into weapon platforms. These 'traps' also cash in on the same context, this time being ordinary everyday fixtures turning into weapon platforms.

The Collector is a toll booth that turns into an assault bunker. Pit Stop Catapult is a gas station that turns into a weapon platform complete with tire catapult and chain saws. Billboard Blast is a billboard sign that turns into a turret with missile launcher. Of these 3 'traps', the pilots are recolours of the original pilots albeit with a change in colour scheme in both pilot and the mask. So do take note when purchasing one of these 'traps'.

The Collector in it's normal mode is that of a toll booth, complete with swinging arm bar.

In it's attack mode, The Collector turns into an assault bunker. To transform it, you'd have to first lift the roof and then push down the front and the sides and then finally pulling out on the orange knob at the end of the arm bar to form the gatling cannon. One can then rotate the machine gun and missile on the sides to the appropriate position. One interesting point to take note of is the moulding of fans at the bottom of the figure. It's that great attention to detail that make M.A.S.K one of my all-time favourite lines and possibly the best toy line ever. The difference with this and the other normal toys is that you have to do some assembling when you first open The Collector, it comes shipped in several pieces which you have to snap together.

There are no further accessories that come with The Collector, everything is attached to the toll booth.

The pilot is Alex Sector whom you might remember was the co-pilot of Rhino and came with the Boulderhill playset with Buddy Hawkes. Alex Sector is basically a recolour of his Boulderhill counterpart, as with his mask. He now sports a grey overalls, black shirt and yellow sleeveless jacket colour scheme compared to the Boulderhill's brown pants, blue long sleeved shirt and grey parka. His mask, Disruptor, is now coloured blue with silver highlights compared to blue with grey highlights for Jackrabbit. Do take note of the colours of the mask when making a purchase of either version, the difference is pretty minimal between the 2. Disruptor features the power to disrupt enemy communications.

M.A.S.K Bulldog

This here is a M.A.S.K Bulldog from the 3rd series, or more commonly known as the racing series. It goes by another name, Bulldoze in the European regions. Several of the latter series M.A.S.K toys had different names in the US and in Europe, this being one of them. The others consists of Bullet (Bandit), Barracuda (Jackal) and Hurricane (Nightstalker).

In it's vehicle mode, Bulldog is a semi, much like Rhino of Series 1, although it is slightly smaller than Rhino. It's fairly reminescient of G1 Optimus Prime in the vehicle mode. Chrome is present in the smokestacks, the front grill & bumper, the hubcaps and the foglights at the top of the roof.

Bulldog's attack mode is some sort of tracked tank. To transform it, all you have to do is to press a button at the back of the vehicle, the cab falls back, the chain saw emerges from the front and the roof flips out as a result of the cab falling back. You then have to move the smokestacks down, pull out the 2 lasers from under the front grill, turn the rear wheels over to expose the tracks and position the missile launcher. Lastly, you can then pivot the seats in the cab to a 45 degree angle, but that is purely optional. In this mode, Bulldog can seat 3 M.A.S.K figures, 2 in the cab and 1 in the front, behind the brown armour which flips out to reveal a seat behind it.

Accessory wise, Bulldog comes with 1 missile that resembles an arrow head with a hole in each 'wing'.

The pilot of Bulldog is Borris Bushkin who made his debut in the cartoon series in the racing series episode, "Demolition Duel to the Death" which was incidentally the first episode for the racing series. His appearance was pretty much like Nash Gorey (Outlaw) in that he was a double agent. Nash was a VENOM double agent while Boris was a M.A.S.K double agent.

Borris' mask is "Comrade" which fired some sort of reddish stars that confused his enemies. Pretty useless power compared to some of the other mask powers, in my own opinion. The mask looks like some bear's face with white fur trimmings.

M.A.S.K Collection

This is probably the best toy line ever. Great attention to detail in the toys, be it in the vehicle modes or the attack modes. The missiles are moulded pretty much the same as they look in the cartoon series and hide away very nicely unlike the missile projectiles of toys nowadays, huge ugly transparent chunks of 'aerodynamic' plastic that look out of place when placed into the figure's missile launcher.

Most of the figures featured a few points of articulation mainly the shoulders, thighs, knees and neck. The shoulders and neck rotate 360 degrees and the thighs and knees have a 90 degree joint. Each figure has their own respective mask.

They had the winning formula in the racing series where the vehicles looked damn great in both their normal and attack modes, with great designs for the attack mode. Just look at Razorback, Wildcat, Goliath and Buzzard.
